General technological progress has improved all areas of human activity and especially ef- fects are pronounced in the automotive industry. One of the new technologies, which promises a lot, is communication using the 5G network. Compared to its predecessors, 5G has many times greater capabilities and data transfer speeds. By applying the 5G network, vehicles will be connected to each other but also to the environment. With the help of 5G network and V2X communication, the vehicles will be enabled to communicate with other vehicles and exchange telemetry data, but also to “see” through the vehicle in front of it. The full application of these technologies will bring many advantages, but disadvantages are to be expected aswell.
The availability of real-time data on the state of railway facilities and the state-of-the art technologies for data collection and analysis allow transition to the fourth generation maintenance. It is based on the prediction of the facility functional safety and dependability and the risk-oriented facility management. The article describes an approach to assessing the risks of hazardous facility failures using the latest digital data processing methods. The implementation of this approach will help set maintenance objectives and contribute to the efficient use of resources and the reduction of railway facility managers’ expenditures.
